Distance no barrier to urgent meal relief

Six thousand FareShare meals are now being enjoyed by the First Nations community of Mornington Island in response to a request for urgent assistance.

In a logistical feat supported by Woolworths and supply chain Primary Connect, FareShare was able to reach the remote community in the Gulf of Carpentaria to tide it over the holiday period.

The nutritious meals cooked in our Morningside kitchen first travelled by intermodal train from Brisbane to Cairns, on to Karumba by local freight and finally to Mornington Island by ferry – a distance of around 2,700km.

FareShare’s First Nations officer Jason Mollenhauer said he was happy that FareShare was able to answer the call for help.

“It is the most remote community that FareShare has been able to get support to,” said Jason.

“These meals will have an impact on the community and early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.”

The special delivery followed a request for crisis support from Mayor Kyle Yanner (pictured second from left) who has been helping to deliver the meals to some of the 1,200 residents on the island.

“The Mornington Island Council would like to thank FareShare for providing meals for the Christmas period,” said Mayor Yanner.

Next year FareShare is extending its Meals for the Mob program to the island.
