What We Accept

Food retailers, wholesalers and distributors

FareShare accepts bulk donations of food to cook meals. This includes:

  • Product close to "use by" date
  • Product no more than eight months past "best before" date
  • Products with damaged labels
  • R&D products or finished/deleted product lines
  • Sample size or bulk produce
  • Products that fall outside the manufacturers' specifications
  • Over/underweight or mislabelled products

Caterers, private and corporate

FareShare is always happy to collect surplus food however please be aware we cannot accept the following:

  • Food that has been left in a bain-marie
  • Cooked food that has not been part of a cook-chill process
  • Foods that have been served to the public on a buffet and/or unwrapped and exposed
  • High risk food that has been on display/offer and has been out of the cool room/refrigerator for more than 2 hours
  • Sandwich/bread products – however we can try to link you with a local charity for direct delivery or collection
  • Sausages from sausage sizzles where the sausages have been stored in eskies or cool boxes

Individuals/household

Allthough we cannot collect food donated from individuals or households, we are happy to receive good quality, unopened grocery items within their ‘use by’ dates. You may also like to check your local council website to find community food relief charities in your area.

Donate surplus, bulk food to our kitchen

We accept donations of surplus food from wholesalers, farmers, supermarkets, manufacturers, importers and many other businesses. Our chefs bring this rescued food together to cook more than 5,000 free nutritious meals a day for Melbourne and Victorian charities.

Each year more than 100 businesses provide us with perfectly good food that would otherwise end up in landfill. These include Fonterra (dairy), Kinross Farms (eggs), Woolworths (meat), Boscastle (pastry) and Costa (fresh vegetables and mushrooms).

We aim to make donating as easy as possible for you.

FareShare is open from 8am to 9.30pm Monday to Friday for drop offs and can collect large food donations directly through our fleet of refrigerated vehicles.

Refrigerated food can only be accepted if stored and maintained at between 0 and 5 degrees.

FareShare adheres to local and national food safety guidelines to ensure your donated food is received, stored, cooked, cooled and distributed in a safe condition.

FareShare operates a commercial cook-chill facility that was custom built to accept and safely handle large quantities of food. We have a fleet of eight refrigerated vehicles that can collect donations at short notice within a time slot that suits you.

Food items that are donated in good condition and in good faith to support our mission are covered by the Good Samaritan law which covers potential legal risks for donors.

FareShare also accepts donations from community food drives.

Thanks to generous Victorian pig farmers, FareShare is guaranteed five pigs a week to add protein to our meals until Christmas. The weekly 250 kg pork donations will be enough to cook 2000 free, nutritious meals for vulnerable people. Watch the Channel 9 video above for full story.

Why our generous food donors support FareShare

Costa is proudly supporting FareShare’s mission to fight hunger by donating nutrient rich mushrooms & mushroom stems to incorporate in some of the 5,000 free meals cooked each day. As well as adding nutrition, mushrooms help “bulk up” meals with taste and texture and because they are naturally low GI, help sustain vulnerable people until their next meal.

In Australia, Costa grows, markets and delivers over 500 tonnes of mushrooms per week. Costa recognises that there are people in the community with challenging circumstances and a nutritious hearty meal is not always within reach.

Partnering with FareShare is not only an opportunity to work with a great charity, it also allows us to make our product available free of charge, enabling those less fortunate in the community to have access to healthy food that would otherwise go to waste.

From the very outset Terry Cremean, the founder of Boscastle, started donating fresh pastry to Fare Share. The relationship has endured for nearly two decades due to the clear alignment of Boscastle’s philosophy to support local communities.

Donations of fresh Boscastle pastry have grown over the years to about 700kg a week, with almost 100kg of fresh pastry being delivered daily to support this amazing charity. In addition the business collects and supplies boxes for packaging and is pleased to provide fresh products when available.

Patties Food Group recently acquired the Boscastle business and remains committed to supporting FareShare, the local community and the great work that was started by Terry many years ago.

It is legal to donate food that’s in good condition to charities.

In the early 2000s FareShare successfully lobbied the State Government to have Australia’s first Good Samaritan law introduced to protect food donors.​

To support businesses that wished to donate food to charities,  FareShare teamed up with the Law Institute of Victoria to lobby the state government to provide legal protection to food businesses that wanted to help the community. 

In 2002 the campaign resulted in the passage of what has become known as the Good Samaritan law. This law protects food donors from legal action, where food is donated in good condition and in good faith.

The Good Samaritan law was the first of its kind in Australia and has been replicated in every state and territory since.

And here are the relevant sections of the legislation:

Wrongs and Other Acts (Public Liability Insurance Reform) 2002 – “Good Samaritan law”

Part VIB – Food Donor Protection
31F. Protection of food donors

(1) A person who donates food (the “food donor”) in the circumstances listed in sub-section (2) is not liable in any civil proceeding for any death or injury that results from the consumption of the food.

(2) The circumstances are:

(a) that the food donor donated the food,

(i) in good faith for a charitable or benevolent purpose; and

(ii) with the intention that the consumer of the food would not have to pay for the food; and

(b) that the food was safe to consume at the time it left the possession or control of the food donor; and

(c) if the food was of a nature that required it to be handled in a particular way to ensure that it remained safe to consume after it left the possession or control of the food donor, that the food donor informed the person to whom the food donor gave the food of those handling requirements; and

(d) if the food only remained safe to consume for a particular period of time after it left the possession or control of the food donor, that the food donor informed the person to whom the food donor gave the food of that time limit.

(3) For the purposes of this section, food is safe to consume if it is not unsafe food.
